Elijah

Prophet of Fire and Whisper

Renewal

Scripture (NIV)

And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
1 Kings 19:12 (NIV)

Message

After his greatest victory, Elijah collapsed. God's first response was food, sleep, and a whisper. Sometimes the holiest next step is rest.

Practice

Do one restorative thing today without guilt: sleep earlier, eat well, walk outside.

Prayer

Lord, meet me in my exhaustion. Speak softly and restore my strength. Amen.

Lived out

Short practices that fit Elijah's virtue of renewal.

A practice to try

Handing back what is not mine

I write the worry on a scrap of paper, the actual worry in plain words, and put it in a jar on the shelf. It is not magic and the problem does not vanish. But I stop rehearsing it at 2am, because I have physically put it somewhere else and told God it is His to carry now.

TRY TODAY

Write down one worry in one sentence, pray it once, and put the paper out of sight.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)

A practice to try

Twenty minutes, no headphones

I walk the same loop most evenings with nothing in my ears. The first ten minutes are noise, lists, arguments I have already had. Somewhere in the second ten it goes quiet, and that is usually where I hear something true about myself that I had been outrunning.

TRY TODAY

Walk for twenty minutes today with no audio and let the first ten minutes be noisy.

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

Mark 1:35 (NIV)
