Shepherd, Psalmist, King

Honest Worship

Scripture (NIV)

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Psalm 51:10 (NIV)

Message

David sang his joy and his rage alike. God can hold your unedited heart; He is not waiting for a tidier version of you.

Practice

Write a short psalm of your own: one line of complaint, one line of praise.

Prayer

Lord, I bring You the truth of me. Search my heart and make it clean. Amen.

Lived out

Short practices that fit David's virtue of honest worship.

A practice to try

The rope before your feet touch the floor

Every morning, before I put my feet on the floor, I picture a rope fixed to God, a safety line. I reach up, take hold of it and tie it around my waist. Then I get up. The whole day is done roped to Him: the drive, the meeting I dread, the conversation I keep putting off. When I feel the pull, I remember I am held on the other end.

TRY TODAY

Tomorrow, before you stand up, take ten seconds to picture the rope and say: 'Everything today is done with You.'

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.

Psalm 18:2 (NIV)

Two questions before sleep

At the end of the day I ask two things: where was God in this, and where did I go it alone? No scoring, no guilt list. Most nights I find He was in something ordinary I nearly missed, someone who waited for me, a bit of unexpected help.

TRY TODAY

Ask both questions tonight and write one sentence in your journal about the answer.

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

Psalm 139:23 (NIV)
